چکیده

Flexible composition is an extension of TAG that has been used in a variety of TAG-analyses. In this paper, we present a dedicated study of the formal and linguistic properties of TAGs with flexible composition (TAG-FC). We start by presenting a survey of existing applications of flexible composition. In the main part of the paper, we discuss a formal definition of TAGFCs and give a proof of equivalence of TAG-FC to tree-local MCTAG, via a formalism called delayed tree-local MCTAG. We then proceed to argue that delayed treelocality is more intuitive for the analysis of many cases where flexible composition has been employed.

Binding Variables in English: An Analysis Using Delayed Tree Locality

This paper presents an analysis of bound variable pronouns in English using Synchronous Tree Adjoining Grammar. Bound variables are represented as multi-component sets, composing in delayed tree-local derivations. We propose that the observed anti-locality restriction on English bound variables can be for-malised in terms of a constraint on the delay in the composition of the bound variable mul...

Non-local Right Node Raising: an Analysis using Delayed Tree-Local MC-TAG

In this paper, we show that the analysis of right-node-raising (RNR) in coordinate structures proposed in Sarkar and Joshi (1996) can be extended to non-local RNR if it is augmented with delayed tree locality (Chiang and Scheffler, 2008), but not with flexible composition (Joshi et al., 2003). In the proposed delayed tree-local analysis, we define multicomponent (MC) elementary tree sets with c...

Modelling the ziji Blocking Effect and Constraining Bound Variable Derivations in MC-TAG with Delayed Locality

MC-TAG derivations using delayed locality (i.e. non set-local composition) have been used to model long distance binding in natural language. In this paper, I explore the possibility within Synchronous TAG that tree sets composing via delayed locality may have many possible syntactic derivations for a single semantic form. Using the Mandarin (Chinese) anaphor ziji as a test case, I show that th...

Delayed Tree Locality and the Status of Derivation Structure

While the derived trees yielded by TAG derivations are uncontroversially taken to correspond to phrase structure, the status of TAG derivation structures as more than a record of TAG operations is less certain. An attractive possibility is to interpret the derivation structure as some representation of semantic meaning, such as a dependency analysis. However, the literature has identified cases...

Delayed Tree-Locality, Set-locality, and Clitic Climbing

Since Bleam's (2000) initial claim that capturing clitic climbing patterns in Romance requires the descriptive power of set-local MCTAG (Weir, 1988), alternative approaches to relaxing tree-locality restrictions have been developed, including delayed tree-local MCTAG (Chiang and Scheffler, 2008), which, unlike set-local MCTAG, is weakly equivalent to standard TAG. This paper compares 2-delayed ...
